About OpenGateway

OpenGateway is a product of Electric Function, Inc.. Electric Function started as a provider of customized Content Management Systems and then flourished with the release of Caribou CMS, one of the only website management platforms to take the revenue-generating aspects of your site seriously.

With the success of Caribou CMS, the market was clearly ready for a more focused and expandable billing platform - and one that would continue to support recurring billing as easy as one-time charges.

So, Brock Ferguson, the company's President and Lead Developer, began building an independent billing platform along with a small development team. Initially, the idea was to offer it as a Software-as-a-Service product (similar to its contemporaries), but it became obvious that this model just swapped one middle-man (payment gateways) for another. It didn't reduce dependencies or simplify anything. And it added transaction fees.

So, the project became a downloadable application with a simple installation wizard and easy upgrades. We wanted to make it as easy as a SAAS solution without the security issues, monthly fees, and transaction fees.
